According to Dr. Tasnim Zara, it is very important for both husband and wife to get some tests done for thalassemia, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases before marriage. These tests can ensure that there is no risk of any genetic or infectious disease for the future generation.
She said, “These tests can cost one to one and a half thousand taka. Although it may seem high to many, this cost is very small when you consider the health of the child.”
Highlighting the importance of thalassemia testing in particular, he said that thalassemia is a genetic disease that can be transmitted to children through a carrier. If either of the spouses is a carrier of thalassemia, their children may suffer from thalassemia. People affected by this disease suffer from lifelong anemia and need regular blood transfusions. Therefore, he advised getting an “Hb Electrophoresis” test done before marriage.
In addition, he said that “HBS Ag Anti-HBC” test should be done to prevent hepatitis B and C infection. Because this disease affects the liver and can cause liver cancer in the long run. Along with this, he highlighted the importance of getting tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, etc.
