Mexico City, July 16 : A journalist was shot dead in a store parking lot in the southern tourist city of Acapulco, Mexico.
Regional authorities reported this news. This is the second killing of a journalist in a week in the country.
This new killing occurred within a few days of the killing of another journalist in Mexico, considered a dangerous country for journalists.
Prosecutors said they have opened an investigation into the shooting death of Nelson Mattas.
Matas, director of the news outlet Lo Real de Guerrero, was shot as he got into his car in the parking lot.
In a statement, Guerrero’s state prosecutor’s office reiterated its commitment to a thorough investigation into Matas’ murder.
Mattas has been in journalism for the past 15 years. In particular he dealt with violence. Balbina Flores, Mexico representative of Reporters Without Borders said this.
Reporters Without Borders also says that more than 150 journalists have been killed in the country since 2000.
These killings usually involve the involvement of the country’s powerful drug cartels.
Meanwhile, the body of journalist Luis Martiz Sanchez was recovered after going missing this week. Officials said there were injury marks on his body.
According to official data, more than 13 journalists were killed in the country in 2022 alone.
